Allegations:
Slater got into an altercation with a neighbor in his housing complex. The neighbor started the argument by pushing open a gate and hitting Slater with it, then punching him. The neighbor's stepson then cut Slater's hand with a butcher's knife. During this attack, Slater's fiancée called 911 for help. Officers who arrived on the scene arrested Slater, whose hand was bleeding. When the neighbor tried to attack Slater again, officers put Slater in a police vehicle. Officers took Slater to a hospital but refused to interview anyone at the scene of the attack. They also ignored Slater's fiancée, who tried to tell the officers she had called them because the neighbor and his stepson were attacking Slater. Instead officers arrested Slater and he spent two years in Cook County Jail awaiting his trial. The charges against him were dismissed at a jury trial.
