Case 13-CV-5929

$75,000

FALSE ARREST

Stop and frisk Legal access denied Threats/intimidation Excessive force False arrest or report Physical force Hospitalized

Plaintiff: Jacklyn Miranda

Incident date: 08/08/2013

Location: 2903 N. Kilpatrick Ave.

Allegations:

Miranda witnessed a shooting while out walking with a friend in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. She rushed to assist multiple victims and reported the shooting to a 911 dispatcher. Later, when interviewed by police, Miranda described in detail what she saw and emphasized that she could not identify the shooter because she did not see his face. Despite this, she received intense pressure by officers to identify the shooter. Miranda refused to sign anything identifying a shooter because she did not want to implicate an innocent person. Because of this officers harassed Miranda, accused her of lying and brought her into a police station without justification in order to coerce her into signing a false statement. While at the station officers hit her, denied her access to a phone and called her names. She was later released without any charges; she went to a hospital to get treatment for her injuries.
