Officer Sierra responded to an alleged domestic battery in the West Englewood neighborhood and observed the alleged offender, Farmer, flee from the location on foot. Sierra ran after Farmer while another officer drove the squad car in an attempt to stop him. Near South Wolcott Avenue, Sierra directed Farmer to stop running; he complied and turned to face the officer. Sierra asked him if he had a weapon; Farmer said he did not. Sierra then fired 13 to 14 rounds at Farmer, who collapsed from the multiple gunshot wounds. Sierra approached Farmer, who was laying on his left side in a fetal position, and fired three more rounds into him. A Chicago Police Department video shows Sierra discharging his weapon multiple times. Farmer was declared dead at the scene. Sierra said he had feared for his life and that at one point during the encounter, Farmer had what appeared to be a shiny, black object in his hand. The department concluded that Farmer's death was a “justifiable homicide.”
