Plaintiff:
Gregory L. Champion
Incident date:
09/02/2006
Location:
2020 N. Hamlin Ave.
Allegations:
Champion and his landlord, Dahlquist, verbally agreed that Champion would rent a room inside Dahlquist's house, and that Champion would pay rent on a week-to-week basis. Dahlquist would provide a receipt after each week to track the payments received. For about seven months, Champion furnished his rented room with various pieces of furniture and lived there. One day in September 2006, Champion heard someone trying to enter his locked room. He opened the door and found Officer Root, who said he was responding to a call from Dahlquist alleging that Champion was trespassing. Champion showed Root his rent receipts, signed by Dahlquist himself, along with other documents proving he lived there. Nevertheless, Root removed Champion from his room and allowed Dahlquist to evict Champion. Root then filed a false criminal charge against Champion, and allowed Dahlquist to put Champion's belongings in the yard, where they were soon stolen. Champion was later found not guilty of the charge.
