Plaintiff:
Asim Akbar
Incident date:
05/13/2005
Location:
727 E. 111th St.
Allegations:
Akbar was arrested on suspicion of drinking on a public way and taken to a police station. During processing, Officer West instructed Akbar and several other detainees to pull down their underwear. Some of the detainees told West they had already been searched at another police station, and began making jokes about the officer's sexual preferences and his order to have the men strip. Akbar joined in the jokes, calling West a “meat watcher.” West had Akbar step out of the line and told him to “shut the f**k up.” West punched Akbar in the face, and Officers Jones, Fouch and Dixon joined in. The officers took Akbar to a separate cell, where they continued punching and kicking him. One officer hit Akbar with a milk crate, one used a pole, and one officer hit Akbar several times with a baseball bat until the bat broke. Akbar was dragged to a cell, unable to walk, and, after several hours, was taken to a hospital. X-rays were taken of Akbar's arms, legs and foot, and he received stitches in his leg. Akbar was charged with battery to the police officers, and was later released on bond. Nearly a year after the incident, Akbar was found not guilty of the charge.
